Caffrey's Premium Irish Ale has actually only been around since 1994, when Bass Brewers revived the 1897 name. Unfortunaly, the product all but disappeared from the Montreal market (and others) when some complicated buy-outs occured in the industry. Fortunately, the LCBO and The Beer Store in Ontario still have it, and its popularity seems to be coming back!
For the most part, beer in a can is a bad thing. The nitrogen widget-based beers (like GUINNESS and Kilkenny) put a positive twist on the topic. Caffrey's is also a nitro-fused product, but the pocket does not float like others. Instead, it is stuck to the bottom and releases its gas up through the light-amber liquid.
I first sampled this wonderful creamy golden brew at my favourite watering hole, McKibbin's Irish Pub, here in downtown Montreal. I was immediately hooked! Although it's considered a 'bitter' ale, there is only a slight bitter flavour that comes out in the aftertaste. Otherwise, it has a very creamy, toffee flavour to match the golden amber colour. I believe this is the smoothest beer that I've ever had the pleasure to enjoy!
The Caffrey's brand has changed hands a few times over the years. At the time I'm writing this, the stock available to Canada is produced by Coors Brewers in the UK. At 4.2% a/v, the 440ml cans have less than 165 calories each. This is light on your waist, but not in taste.
